Montpellier, France’s top student city

Already ranked the best student city by L’Étudiant magazine in 2023, Montpellier has once again secured the top spot in 2024. According to the ranking published in July 2024, the city now welcomes over 80,000 students, more than 17% of its total population.

A city focused on youth

With a score of 99 out of 121, Montpellier stands out for its vibrant atmosphere, beautiful architecture, proximity to the sea, and wide range of academic programs. Free public transportation is another major advantage, helping the city maintain its position on the podium for two consecutive years.

“A student city, cosmopolitan, and youth-oriented by nature, Montpellier is once again being recognized for its appeal, its academic offering, and its high quality of life. Without a doubt, Montpellier is a great place to study,” said Mayor Michaël Delafosse at the Salon de l’Étudiant held in Pérols from January 16th to 18th, 2025, as reported by La Gazette de Montpellier.

The L’Étudiant ranking is based on several indicators in which Montpellier performed exceptionally well:

• Attractiveness: scoring 19/20, Montpellier is praised for its energy and frequent events.
• Academic programs: the city offers a strong and diverse selection of programs, including a full range of preparatory classes and elite schools (prépas et grandes écoles).
• Student Life: with a score of 21/30, student life in Montpellier is enriched by local initiatives (such as social support for students) and a vibrant cultural scene.
• Living Environment: students enjoy a pleasant and affordable lifestyle, including reasonable housing and transport costs, access to sports facilities, green spaces, and an extensive cycling network.
• Employment: Montpellier received a perfect score of 10/10 in this category, recognized as a dynamic city with many job opportunities and a low unemployment rate.
